Our website contains detailed information about the MBST therapy system, the MBST therapy and various diseases of the musculoskeletal system. For a short overview we have set up this FAQ site. Here, you will find answers to the most frequently asked questions of patients who contact us.
MBST magnetic resonance therapy
What are the side effects of MBST therapy?
MBST has been in use internationally since 1998. To date, no side effects have become known to us.
Do I need to take medication?
Injections, intravenous infusions, drugs or pain killers are no integral part of the MBST therapy. Your attending doctor will decide whether or not these are necessary or useful in your case.
Will I immediately feel better after the treatment?
MBST cannot compensate overnight for damages that have developed over long periods of time. However, many patients report that their mobility improved rapidly and that the associated pain was reduced or even disappeared. Professional athletes have also reported that they were able to resume intensive training and also to succeed in competitions shortly after the therapy. More information: Patients Athletes
How much does it cost?
The costs of the therapy depend on the number of therapy units necessary. These are determined by the attending doctor according to indication and severity of the damage. More information
Are there any contraindications?
After a strict risk-benefit assessment by your attending doctor, we advise against the MBST therapy if the following conditions are present: If there are active implants such as pace makers, defibrillators (ICD systems), pain and insulin pumps or tumours in the treatment area. We also advise against the use of MBST for patients suffering from HIV and leukaemia or for pregnant women. The MBST therapy does not affect your fitness to drive and to operate machinery. No interactions with other therapeutic measures are currently known to us. More information
Is the efficacy of the MBST therapy proven by studies?
Efficacy and tolerability of MBST therapy in treating many diseases and complaints of the musculoskeletal system and associated discomfort and impairments is confirmed by meaningful data from numerous studies and specialist publications. You are welcome to contact your doctor, the national licencee or MedTec Medizintechnik GmbH directly for access to the published data. More information
How is the course of the therapy?
A treatment cycle consists of 5 to 10 treatment units depending on indication and severity of the damage. Each session lasts for 60 minutes. The sessions should take place on consecutive days. More information
How long does the effect last?
Patient data showed that pain was often reduced for up to several years after the treatment and the bone density was at a higher level in examinations one year later. But as with all other medical treatments, the individual way of life and further conditions have an influence on the effect of the therapy. More information
Where can I be treated?
The scientifically confirmed MBST magnetic resonance thearpy is only applicated in certified MBST treatment centres after a medical diagnosis. Thus, we ensure that you will receive a MBST magnetic resonance therapy that is specifically adapted to your complaints. A list of the locations of MBST treatment centres can be found here. Please note, that the treatment possiblities are dependent on the therapy devices available which means that not every treatment centre may be suited for the treatment of all possible indications for MBST therapy.
Is there anything I need to pay special attention to during MBST therapy?
Drink a lot during the therapy, preferably still water or still juice spritzers. Frequent moderate training with controlled stressed strengthens muscles and joints. If possible, take off things metal or magnetisable. Chipcards that come into the treatment zone might be rendered unusable.
Osteoarthrosis · Wear of the joint
Which indications can be treated?
In general, different kinds of cartilage defects can be treated with MBST. Most common is osteoarthrosis of, for example, hip, knee, fingers and hand, shoulder, elbos, ankle and vertebral bodies that can be treated with the respective specified therapy devices. Furthermore, MBST therapy can be used for the treatment of traumatic cartilage defects, also meniscus. Please contact a doctor in an MBST treatment centre for a medical diagnosis and assessment.
Are there studies regarding MBST therapy for osteoarthrosis?
There are in-vitro as well as clinical studies about MBST osteoarthritis therapy. You can read them here on our homepage or order them. Patient data of a number of studies including one multi-centre study with more than 4,500 patients shows significant changes in frequency and severity of pain. These improvements have often been noticeable for up to several years after the treatment.
Is MBST suitable for the treatment of all stages of osteoarthrosis?
Generally yes. But the therapy result is influenced by the amount of cartilage cells that are still present as well as their distribution. That is why the treatment of arthrosis up to grade 3 promises the best results. The treatment of stage 4 arthrosis is considered as a therapy attempt. Patient data and reports show, however, that also at this stage a reduction up to complete freedom of pain is possible.
Is there anything I should pay special attention to after an MBST therapy for osteoarthritis?
Even when the pain recedes very quickly, early full stressing of the joint is not recommended. Frequent moderate training is possible and also supportive but too much stress should be avoided.
Osteoporosis · Bone Conditions
Why does it say partly or whole-body treatment in the case of osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is a metabolic disease, therefore usually the whole skeletal system is affected which is why a whole-body treatment makes sense in most cases. The whole-body treatment can be applicated in MBST treatment centers that have a whole-body treatment couch like OSTEO·SPIN or OSTEO·SYSTEM. But osteoporosis may also be present only locally, for example as secondary disease caused by certain medication or as inactivity osteoporosis after amputation. Since the bone metabolism is stimulated by movement, the supply of the bones can not be kept up if there is a permanent lack of the necessary stress, which in turn reduces bone density. Such a metabolic disorder may also be caused by reduced movement due to continuously taking a relieving posture because of arthrotic pain. That and other kinds of local bone disorders, such as bone bruise, can also be treated with other MBST therapy devices than the whole-body treatment couches mentioned.
Are there studies about MBST therapy for osteoporosis?
There are in-vitro as well as clinical studies about MBST osteoarthritis therapy. You can read them here on our homepage or order them. Data from several studies showed a distinct increase of bone density that persisted for longer than the duration of the one-year-long study. Data from case studies indicated that patients who had received an MBST treatment very seldomly suffered fractures despite having falls or accidents.
Which conditions of bone tissue can also be treated with MBST?
Patient data and doctor’s experiences show that good to very good results could be achieved in the treatment of bone metabolic disorders such as bone edema (bone bruise), bone necroses, fatigue fractures and inflammations of the periosteum as well as in the acceleration of healing processes after fractures. The list of successfully treated indications also includes various diseases of child and adolescent age such as Osgood Schlatter and Kohler’s disease.
Can I have an MBST therapy for osteoporosis while taking bisphosphonates?
We recommend to pause the intake of bisphosphonates while the MBST therapy cycle lasts.
Intervertebral disc conditions
Can MBST be used in the treatment of slipped disk?
MBST has been used with good success in cases of slipped disks. A precondition is that the disk prolapse is not so severe to require an operation.
Are there studies about MBST therapy for intervertebral discs ?
There are in-vitro as well as clinical studies about MBST osteoarthritis therapy. You can read them here on our homepage or order them. Data from studies showed an improvement of the symptoms as well as a reduction of sick leave days.
Acute and chronic sports and accidental injuries
What kinds of injuries can be treated with MBST therapy?
MBST can be used with the aim of accelerating the healing process in case of injuries. Possible indications are partial ruptures of tendons, ligaments and muscles, tendopathies such as tennis elbow or golfer’s elbow, bursitis as well as typical sports injures like meniscal lesions and jumper’s knee. Also injuries and diseases of the bone, fractures, especially stress fractures and bone edema (bone bruise).
Is the MBST therapy used in professional sports?
MBST is used nationally and internationally by athletes, team doctors and sports medicine specialists. Here you can find case reports of MBST treatments of internationally competing athletes. Top athletes, who have been treated with the MBST therapy, say that they could resume their training earlier and were even able to win medals (e.g. in Olympic Games and world championships) shortly after finishing the therapy.
What is the MBST therapy approach in the treatment of injuries?
In the treatment of injuries and other indications MBST is used for its anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving effects and to actively accelerate healing processes, also preventive and postsurgical.
MBST magnetic resonance technology · MBST active principle
What is the active principle of MBST magnetic resonance therapy?
MBST therapy is based on resp. uses the physical principle of magnetic spin resonance. It combines magnetic fields and radio waves (RF pulses). The pulses transmit energy to the protons, thus altering their biophysical parameters in a measurable way. Hydrogen nuclei take up energy and then release it again partly to the surrounding tissue. Scientific data suggests that MBST magnetic resonance technology stimulates various biophysical processes and triggers anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects. The same principle of the stimulation of hydrogen protons is used in MRI – magnetic resonance imaging. Different tissue parameters are used here to obtain images for diagnostic purposes. More information
Is there a difference of MBST magnetic resonance therapy and magnetic field treatment systems?
Treatment options using magnetic fields, such as for example the pulsating signal therapy, use simple magnetic fields, sometimes with added non-targeted electric impulses. MBST magnetic resonance therapy on the other hand is the only therapy method that generates magnetic spin conditions, just as the MRI tomograph does – a different technological principle. Furthermore, for the development of the MBST magnetic resonance therapy biophysical parameters of the individual kinds of tissues were determined in cooperation with the Institute of nuclear physics, University of Gießen, and the Laboratory for medical and molecular biology, University of Applied Sciences Aachen. This is the basis for the RF pulses that especially target the specific tissue that shall be treated. Authors of various studies mentioned that the effects they observed where only noticeable when magnetic resonance was used but not in the case of a treatment with simple magnetic fields.
Can I go to any MBST treatment centre for any MBST therapy?
The choice of the MBST treatment centre also depends on the indication. Not all treatment centres are equipped with therapy devices for the treatment of all indications and all body parts. A list of locations and contact persons of MBST treatment centres worldwide can be found here. Please contact us if you can’t find a MBST treatment centre for your therapy, we will gladly help you.
Why are there different MBST therapy cards?
Tissue, for example bone or cartilage tissue, is differentiated by its biophysical parameters. The MedTec developed determined those tissue-specific proton spin resonace data using magnetic spin spectroscopy. This data is the basis for the development of the indication-specific MBST thearpy sequences that are stored on the MBST therapy cards. In this way, we want to ensure that every patient is always treated with an therapy card that contains therapy sequences that are specifically programmed for his indication/disease resp. the tissue to be treated in order to enable achieving the best possible therapy success.
Why are there different MBST therapy devices?
The MBST therapy devices are designed for the treatment of specific indications and treatment zones. They are constructed to enable the patient to take on a position he can keep comfortably for the one-hour therapy unit. The therapy devices also generate magnetic fields of different volumes. Some devices are especially designed for the requirements a treatment of arms and legs poses, while the treatment couches are also suitable for the treatment of intervertebral disc conditions. Furthermore, the list of possible indications has been extended in the new therapy device generations.
